Differential-algebraic equations are the most natural way to mathematically model many complex systems in science and engineering. Once the model is derived, it is important to optimize the design parameters and control it in the most robust and efficient way to maximize performance. This book presents the latest theory and numerical methods for the optimal control of differential-algebraic equations. The following features are presented in a readable fashion so the results are accessible to the widest audience:

About the Author
Lorenz T. Biegler is the Bayer Professor of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He is the author of over 250 archival publications and two books. His research interests lie in computer-aided process engineering and include flow sheet optimization, optimization of chemical process dynamics, reactor network synthesis, and algorithms for constrained, nonlinear process control.
Stephen L. Campbell is a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at North Carolina State University and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He is the author of nine books and over 230 technical publications. His research interests include theory and numerical methods for differential–algebraic equations, optimal control, applied linear algebra, and various applications involving dynamical systems.
Volker Mehrmann is a Professor at Technische Universität Berlin. He is a member of acatech (National Academy of Science and Engineering in Germany) and president of GAMM (The International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics), as well as a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He is author of 10 books and over 200 technical publications and he is an Editor-in-Chief of Linear Algebra and its Applications and Chairman of DFG Research Center MATHEON in Berlin. His research interests include numerical mathematics/scientific computing, applied and numerical linear algebra, control theory, and the theory and numerical solution of differential-algebraic equations.
